Rep. Luetkemeyer Questions FDIC Chair Martin Gruenberg

Today, Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-03) questioned Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Chair Martin Gruenberg as part of the Committee on Financial Services hearing titled, “Oversight of Prudential Regulators”. During questioning, Congressman Luetkemeyer focused on instances of race and gender discrimination, anger mismanagement and sexual assault as outlined in a recently released report by law firm Cleary Gottlieb.

Background: Last week, the law firm Cleary Gottlieb published an independent, nonpartisan report confirming widespread and deep-rooted misconduct at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The Cleary Gottlieb report detailed a toxic workplace culture within the agency, including instances of verbal abuse, sexual assault, and discrimination.

“Sir, there were 92 harassment claims, according to the report. You have to be either totally incompetent or allowing it to go on. The report talks about gender and race discrimination, sexual harassment, nepotism, and your anger management issues. But we know some more, sir. I’ve been here a long time; this is my 14th year on this Committee. You lied to me, you lied to the Chairman, and you lied to the Committee about Operation Chokepoint, said Congressman Luetkemeyer.

“Mr. Gruenberg, you have become the Michael Cohen and Harvey Weinstein of the FDIC, and you need to go. If you have any decency, please step down. If not, I would urge the President of the United States to replace you ASAP.”
