I had the distinct honor recently to participate in a ceremony marking the 60th Anniversary of the Korean War in Washington, Mo., and it reminded me of the importance of honoring those who have served in defense of our nation. Many historians have referred to the Korean War as the “forgotten war,” which makes my blood boil because I strongly believe that no sacrifice in defense of our nation should ever be forgotten. And that includes the sacrifices made by military families as well.

This past week, in addition to observing Memorial Day, I had the privilege of hosting the 3rd District Veterans’ Benefits Workshop in Jefferson City. The convergence of those two events, occurring the same week, really got me to thinking.

As part of his ongoing efforts to better understand and serve those filing for service-related claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-3) announced today that he will host the inaugural 3rd District Veterans’ Benefits Workshop from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, at the Jefferson City Police Training Room inside the Jefferson City Police Station, 401 Monroe Street.

As Congress debated the veteran appropriations bill on the House floor last week, my thoughts turned to Flag Day, which is quickly approaching, and what the symbol represents to our veterans. For me, Old Glory symbolizes our freedom and strength, as well as the American spirit that is the envy of the world.
