A typical day involves debating legislation on the House floor, listening to and questioning witnesses in committee hearings, and, mostly, meeting with the many constituents from Missouri who travel to Washington.

The 3rd Congressional District is home to more than 762,000 individuals living in 13 counties in eastern and central Missouri. As I regularly meet with and listen to constituents from all over the district, I hear many different viewpoints and learn about many different priorities. Looking back on 2015, I am reminded what an honor it is to serve as your voice in Congress. Providing for the common defense of our nation is one of the explicit duties given to the federal government by the United States Constitution. Now more than ever, as terrorists fueled by Islamic extremism attack America and her allies at home and abroad, it is critical that our government exercise this constitutional duty to keep America safe and secure. While the administration has not proposed a clear strategy to defeat our enemies yet, Congress has passed important measures to keep the American people and our homeland safe in recent weeks.

Parents and local educators know what is best for our nation’s children; parents are the ones who are raising their children to become well-rounded individuals and educators are with the children day in and day out and they know how to best operate a classroom. I believe that entrusting education decisions with those closest to the students, rather than bureaucrats in Washington, creates the most effective and sustainable education programs.
