Blaine’s Bulletin: March for Life

Washington, January 19, 2018 -

Every January thousands of people from Missouri and around the country travel to Washington DC for the annual March for Life.  Often times traveling through snow and ice on the nearly 20 hour drive, these dedicated Missourians are steadfast in their mission to protect unborn children. Once again this year I had the opportunity to speak with the hundreds of people from our state.  I continue to be impressed by their resolve and motivated by our shared passion to speak for those who cannot yet speak for themselves.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. Since that day we have lost millions of innocent lives in the U.S. to abortion. Millions of children have had their lives taken away before they got a chance to live it. While this chilling fact will always loom over us, this year we have a renewed optimism for the pro-life cause. The American people elected a unified pro-life government, and thanks to them, we are making great strides.

Last year President Trump signed an executive order to block foreign aid and federal funding for international, nongovernmental organizations that provide or promote abortion services. With the President’s action, he continued President Reagan’s legacy of refusing to allow American taxpayer dollars to be spent on abortions overseas.  The House has taken similar action by passing the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act.  This bill prohibits taxpayer dollars from being used to support abortions in the U.S. or abroad.

In the House I have been leading the charge against the sale of fetal tissue. I am extremely proud that my bill the Protecting Life and Integrity in Research Act was included in the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies appropriations bill which passed the House on July 21, 2017.  This important piece of legislation prohibits the sale of any tissue from an abortion.

In addition, the House has held investigations on the illegal sale of aborted babies by Planned Parenthood that have led to 15 criminal and regulatory referrals.  We recently passed the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act to ban abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act which protects children who have survived a failed abortion attempt, and several other important pieces of legislation that protect life. These bills, the President’s actions, and the fighting spirit of so many people across the country are allowing us to chip away at the heartbreaking policies of the last four and half decades.

It was a real pleasure spending time with everyone who traveled to DC.  Please continue to stay engaged and keep up your hard work and dedication.  We need it to continue moving the ball forward and, more importantly, the children of the future need it to be able to live the life God intended for them.
