Blaine’s Bulletin: October District Work Period

Washington, October 11, 2019 -

Over Congress’ October work period, I spent a very productive two weeks in Missouri’s Third District meeting with constituents. From home builders to medical technology professionals to families continuing to struggle with the effects of the devastating flooding over the summer, I met with a whole host of Missourians.  I even spent a little time at the county jail.

I had the opportunity to meet with the Missouri Home Builders Association to discuss the economy and importance of home building in Missouri. Home building signals a healthy economy and is central to fulfilling the American Dream of home ownership. Our home builders are literally creating the communities where we live and raise our families. The Missouri housing market remains strong, and I am encouraged by the continued growth of many communities around our district.

Elekta is a leading force in the medical equipment and software industry. The company has over 100 St. Charles-based employees and has just committed to 10 more years in St. Charles – great news for our local economy. Their products improve the quality of life for people fighting cancer and brain disorders. According to “U.S News & World Report’s” yearly hospital rankings, the top 50 cancer hospitals in the country rely on Elekta products.  It was a real pleasure to visit their site and meet with employees.  One topic of discussion was the importance of government supporting innovation. A good example of that is the repeal of the medical device tax.  I support that effort because it is imperative that we allow American businesses to flourish without the heavy hand of government holding them back.

Last week I also had a very productive visit at the St. Charles County Department of Corrections. Along with keeping our streets safe, the department is a major job creator, employing almost 200 Missourians.  The visit was very informative as we discussed the challenges they have had with overcrowding and recidivism, along with potential solutions to these problems. We can’t thank the department staff and the entire law enforcement community enough for their service to our communities.

Unfortunately, this fall has brought a lot of rain to our state. Just as Missourians are recovering from the devastating effects of the flooding earlier this year, we have had more rain in the lower basin coupled with heavy snow in the upper basin, which continues to add to the threat of more flooding. I met with local leaders to discuss the devastating flooding and much needed levee rehab around the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.  We are currently working on comprehensive legislation that will better equip us to prevent and respond to future flooding, and I look forward to the continued input from the people here on the ground as we work through that process.

I always enjoy these work periods and being able to hear what you think is, and is not, working in Washington, D.C. After a productive two weeks, I am looking forward to getting back to work for you in the nation’s capital.
