Blaine's Bulletin: The Importance of Manufacturing

Washington, October 2, 2015 -

258,400. That is the number of employees that are employed by manufacturers in the state of Missouri. 17.6 million. That is the estimated number of manufacturing jobs in the United States.

Those two numbers alone are reason enough to support the manufacturing industry. And with October designated as National Manufacturing Month, I wanted to highlight a couple of reasons why I believe manufacturing is so important in our nation. Across the country, and especially in Missouri, so many individuals rely on a strong economy to keep this sector moving in the right direction.

Our nation is poised to move into a manufacturing renaissance that will bring with it new jobs, increased pay, and improved economic competitiveness. Unfortunately, the current administration seems intent on making us the world leader in red tape, not manufacturing, which is why I continue to fight the flurry of regulation. One important to bill, which I cosponsored and supported on the House floor, to help manufacturers is the Small Business Regulatory Flexibility Improvement Act. This bill would ensure that government agencies are completing the proper cost-benefit and economic analyses when proposing rules that affect not only small businesses, but businesses of all sizes. This bill also increases the transparency of the rule-making process by requiring agencies to provide a detailed summary outlining the disproportionate effects the proposed rule would have on small businesses.

In addition, I am a proud member of the House Manufacturing Caucus. The caucus was created to examine and promote policies to help American manufacturers find trained, educated workers, continue to lead the world in developing new industrial technologies, and operate on a level playing field with their foreign competitors.

I know hard-working individuals, entrepreneurs, small businesses, and manufacturers have always been the lifeblood of the American economy by creating jobs and spurring innovation. Please know I will continue to support legislation like the Keystone XL Pipeline and the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny Act which would require each chamber of Congress to approve regulations that are estimated to have an annual economic impact of $100 million or more. Both of those commonsense pieces of legislation promote a pro-growth, pro-manufacturing policy.
